Probably made some mistakes, that's why I wanted to try it out in real life I am operating under the assumption that the coffee is much hotter than the surrounding temperature at the start (very reasonable) and that the milk stays the same temperature then entire time (depends, are you pulling the milk out of the fridge and letting it warm while breakfast finishes, or are you leaving it in the fridge? Regardless, assuming the coffee has a higher temperature difference between it and the outside air than the milk does, then the effect holds true).Įdit: added missing words to first sentence However, if you wait to add the milk, the coffee has a rapid cooling due to the high temperature difference, and then the milk is added, which cools it down even more. Then, upon adding the milk, the temperature of the coffee drops right away, and thus the rest of the cooling is at a slower rate. So, when the coffee is first brewed, it is at its hottest and is losing heat the quickest. The reason is due to Newton's Law of Cooling which states that the rate at which on object cools is proportional to the temperature difference between it and its surroundings. Under most circumstances, you're better off adding the milk to the coffee immediately than waiting.
